Sri Lanka win Plate, Japan win Cup

Japan beat hosts Hong Kong 19-12 in the 1st leg of the Asia Rugby sevens to win the Cup championship worked off on Saturday (2). Meanwhile Sri Lanka beat Philippines 32-19 to win the Plate championship and secure a strong 5th place finish in the series. Sri Lanka trailed 10-12 at half time and dug in deep to overpower the tough Philippines side.

Sri Lanka were beaten 33-5 by Japan and went down 24-14 to South Korea in the qualifying rounds. The Lankans beat Malaysia 45-0 to enter the plate final.Sri Lanka now have 3 weeks to prepare for the second leg of the series and secure a place for the World Rugby 7s series.
